Sprint launches new Tegra 2 Android phone

Sprint joins AT&T and Verizon in its release of a dual-core smartphone

Sprint has launched its long-rumored Photon 4G, its first Motorola Android phone running the Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core ARM processor.

"The Photon blends personal and business needs," said Sprint CEO Dan Hesse in a launch event held in New York.

The Photon could be seen as Sprint's version of the AT&T Motorola Atrix, or the Verizon Droid X2, both of which also run on the Tegra 2.

The Photon features a 4.3-inch qHD display, with an 8-megapixel camera. It runs Android version 2.3, Gingerbread and has a kickstand. For business users, it features the ability to remotely wipe content from the devices.

"No other Sprint phone has these features," said Fared Adib, Sprint vice president of product development, at the event.

Motorola also showed off a second new phone, the Triumph, which can be used with pre-paid Virgin Mobile plans. This phone features two cameras, a 5-megapixel camera as well as a front-facing VGA camera capable of capturing high-definition (720p) video. It has a 4.1-inch screen and a 1Ghz processor. It runs the Virgin Mobile Live 2.0 social music application.
