HTC backflips on Desire Gingerbread update

Contrary to what HTC announced yesterday, the company will bring Gingerbread to the original Desire smartphone

Less than a day after announcing that the HTC Desire smartphone would not be updated to the latest 2.3 "Gingerbread" firmware, HTC has done a full U-turn and revealed that the phone will in fact be updated to the latest version of Android.

Originally citing a lack of memory as a reason for the Desire not receiving the Gingerbread update, HTC published the back-flip on its UK Facebook page early this morning.

"Contrary to what we said earlier, we are going to bring Gingerbread to HTC Desire."

We're not sure how the HTC Desire suddenly has enough memory to run the new software given it was only yesterday that the 576MB of RAM wasn't enough, but hey, we aren't complaining.

HTC has not yet set a date for the release of the Gingerbread update, nor announced whether HTC Sense would be stripped down given the Desire's lower memory compared with newer Android phones.

UPDATE: HTC has posted a further update on its international Facebook page confirming it will "cut selected apps" from the Gingerbread release. "To resolve Desire's memory issue and enable the upgrade to Gingerbread, we will cut select apps from the release," said the post. "Look for status updates starting next week. We apologise for any confusion."
