Using iPhoto 1.0: Part 2 with Mac OS

In earlier columns we looked at setting up and using Apple's iPhoto software to facilitate the organisation and search functionality of your favourite image collections, such as those from a digital camera or the Web. This month we finish by covering the creation of Albums and Photo Books, and offer some ideas on how to share your pics with others.


Having already imported your images into iPhoto's Photo Library, you can arrange your photos by date (--D) or by film roll (--F) or drag them around manually. You can also create and name a new photo Album (-N) into which you can sort your photos. You can place photos from the Library into your new album by dragging and dropping image thumbnails from the Library over the album name that you have just created in the left side window. Using -A to select all your image thumbnails will allow you to move them all at once. Holding down the key as you select individual thumbnails will also make things easier, as a blue border will appear around each currently selected thumbnail. Photos are automatically added to the Library before you can add them to an album. If you want to change the name of an album, double-click on its title in the left side window of iPhoto and type in your new name. You can delete an album or photo from iPhoto by selecting it and pressing .


With iPhoto, Book mode is used to lay out photos from your albums together with text such as comments about a particular photo. To create a book, create and then select an album of relevant photos before clicking the Book mode button located in the lower centre of iPhoto. You should now see the images from that album arranged by default over a few different pages complete with some text areas. Most of the features in Book mode can be customised from the Theme and Page Design (via the pull-down menus of the same name) through to the choice of displaying titles, comments and page numbers. The screenshot on this page shows Book mode in action. If you have selected a Theme that uses text, editing the text to place your comment is as easy as clicking inside the blue guide lines and typing away. You can preview your book's progress by clicking on the Preview button found at the lower right of iPhoto when in Book mode.


Once you've built up a library of photos, chances are you're going to want to share them with others at some stage. To export a photo from your library, simply select the photo then press -E. You're able to save the file as a TIFF image or as a JPEG image, the latter being ideal for sending over the Internet. After clicking the Share mode button located in the lower centre of iPhoto, you will see the following features: Print, Slide Show, Order Prints, Order Book, Home Page and Export. The Ordering and Home Page features may require signing up to an iTools Internet account.


To create a Slide Show, select the album you wish to show and then the photos inside it. Remember that using -A will select all photos, and holding while selecting a photo will remove just that photo from the entire selection. After clicking the Slide Show icon you will be able to set how long each slide/photo will be displayed, whether or not to repeat the slide show and also decide on what music, if any, will be played. Selecting the Music pull-down menu and choosing Other will allow you to browse your hard disk for music files such as MP3s. When you're happy with your settings, click OK to begin the show.

In much the same way, you can create a movie of your photos. Select the photos or album that you want in your movie and click the Export icon. Click the QuickTime tab, choose your options and click Export. QuickTime movies can be opened with QuickTime Player, or your Internet browser if you have the plug-in installed.


When you clicked the Export icon, you may have noticed another tab titled Web Page. From this tab you can quickly and easily save a group of selected photos as a Web page complete with thumbnail previews, ready to be uploaded to a Web server. When you've set your options from inside the Web Page tab and clicked Export, it's a good idea to create and name a new folder in which to store the Web page files. You can preview how the site is going to look before you upload, by double-clicking on the index.html file in the directory you created.
