Nvidia appoints new CTO to boost high-performance business

Nvidia hires former Cray CTO Steve Scott to drive the company's HPC strategy

Nvidia on Wednesday appointed a new chief technology officer for its Tesla business unit to provide a spark to its fast-growing high-performance computing (HPC) business.

Nvidia appointed Steve Scott to run the company's Tesla business unit, which deals in multicore graphics cards that enable complex math and scientific calculation on supercomputers. Scott will be responsible for the Tesla road map and architecture while also driving Nvidia's HPC strategy, the company said in a statement.

Scott previously worked for 19 years at Cray, where he served his last six years as senior vice president and CTO.

The appointment demonstrates that Nvidia is serious about growing its presence in the HPC segment, said Dean McCarron, principal analyst at Mercury Research.

Nvidia, mostly known as a graphics card vendor, started off small but now sees many supercomputers on the Top500 list using its graphics cards. The world's second-largest supercomputer, Tianhe-1A at the National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin, China, combines Nvidia graphics cards and Intel Xeon CPUs to deliver a sustained performance of 2.5 petaflops as measured by the Linpack benchmark.

Cray has a strong presence in the HPC market, and Scott can bring some expertise to help Nvidia grow in the market, McCarron said.
