Amazon cloud SDKs for Android, iOS exit beta testing

The kits should make it easier for developers to integrate Amazon's cloud with the iPad, iPhone and Android-based devices

Amazon's SDKs (software development kits) for Android and Apple's iOS have exited the beta testing phase, the company said on Wednesday.

The company wants make it easier for developers to build mobile applications that take advantage of its cloud-based services. Previously, developers had to do more of the work themselves, according to Amazon.

Using the SDKs developers can make API (application programming interface) requests directly from a mobile application to Amazon's Web Services. Developers can integrate their applications with a long list of services, including Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), Simple Storage Service (S3), the SimpleDB database and send messages using Simple Notification Service (SNS) and Simple Queue Service (SQS).

Amazon has also added examples that show how to more securely access Amazon Web Services by temporarily distributing security credentials to the mobile application.

Possible applications include uploading photos, videos, and other types of content to Amazon S3; sharing game moves and high scores using Amazon SimpleDB, or transmitting messages between smartphones without the need for any additional server infrastructure, Amazon said.

The SDKs for iOS and Android can be downloaded from Amazon's Mobile Developer Center, where developers can find sample code, documentation, tools, and additional resources to help them build mobile applications on Amazon Web Services.

HP OfficeJet Pro 8730

I've had a multifunction printer in the office going on 10 years now. It was a neat bit of kit back in the day -- print, copy, scan, fax -- when printing over WiFi felt a bit like magic. It’s seen better days though and an upgrade’s well overdue. This HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 looks like it ticks all the same boxes: print, copy, scan, and fax. (Really? Does anyone fax anything any more? I guess it's good to know the facility’s there, just in case.) Printing over WiFi is more-or- less standard these days.
