Oz domian reseller suspended from providing .nz domain names

Internet Name Group which has been suspended from providing .nz domain names says it thought it was resolving its issues with Domainz.

Domainz, which runs New Zealand's internet domain name registry, has suspended Melbourne-based Internet Name Group from providing .nz domain names following a "spam" attack on thousands of local domain name holders.

Domainz took the step after receiving complaints from people and organisations targeted by the ING in an aggressive mass mail-out marketing campaign.

Headed "Protect Your Domain Name" the letters and emails gave recipients the impression they were in danger of losing their registered domain names unless they paid Internet Name Group a $250 "pre-registration fee."

Domainz head Derek Locke says Domainz sent ING a letter asking how they proposed to remedy what was a clear breach of their agreement as a .nz service provider.

He says the company was given until 5pm Tuesday to respond and when it did not do so adequately was suspended.

"If we do not have a satisfactory explanation within 21 days, they will no longer be an accredited provider," he says.

"Sending out large numbers of letters to nameholders is clearly contrary to The Internet Name Group's obligations under their .nz provider agreement with Domainz."

But ING spokesman Mark Spektor says, "We have sent them responses to their questions and we thought we were resolving things with them. As far as we are concerned aware we are discussing the issues they want us to address."

He says ING is seeking legal advice on its rights in the matter.

"As far as we are concerned we have done nothing wrong. Our marketing campaign was to do with the .biz and .info domain names and nothing to do with .nz which Domainz administers."
