Huawei's MediaPad tablet slated for China release in Oct

The device uses Android 3.2, which is designed for 7-inch tablets

Huawei's 7-inch tablet, which it unveiled in June, will be released in China and several other markets in the Asia-Pacific region in October, according to a company spokeswoman.

Called the MediaPad, the tablet was originally marketed as the first to use version 3.2 of Google's Android OS, which Huawei said was specifically designed to run on a 7-inch tablet.

Huawei spokeswoman Heather Hsieh could not provide pricing details at this time. She also declined to say when the tablet would be released in other markets. The company had previously said the MediaPad would be released in the Americas, Asia-Pacific and some European countries in the third quarter.

The MediaPad weighs in at 390 grams and is 10.5 mm thick. It features a Qualcomm dual-core 1.2Ghz processor. Battery life lasts more than six hours. The device can also playback 1080p high-definition video and comes with a 5-megapixel camera at the rear and a 1.3 megapixel camera in the front.

Huawei, a Chinese company best known as a telecommunications equipment supplier, is also aiming to become a major manufacturer of tablets. Last year, the company released its Ideos S7 device in certain markets, including the U.S. The tablet ran Android 2.1 and cost between US$300 and $400.
