Nokia's N9 smartphone — the first to run the company's MeeGo operating system — is now available through Telstra after the telco detailed pricing and plans on its Web site.
The Nokia N9 will be sold through all three major carriers in Australia — Telstra, Optus and Vodafone — but Telstra is the first to announce pricing details. The Nokia N9 (16GB model) will be available through Telstra for $840 outright and will also be sold on a variety of plans. These include $20 per month on Telstra's $59 Freedom Connect plan over 24 months, meaning a total of $79 per month. Alternatively, the N9 is also available for no extra monthly cost on Telstra's $79, $99 and $129 Freedom Connect plans, or $35 per month on the $45 Freedom Connect plan (totaling $80 per month).
Described by Nokia as appealing to the "style conscious consumer" rather than serious technology buffs, the N9 is Nokia's first-ever "pure touch" smartphone. It has no keypad or home button on the front — the only physical controls are on the right side in the form of volume buttons and a lock key.
The N9 is a candybar handset constructed from solid polymer, and according to Nokia it uses the same material found in ice hockey helmets. The company says the polycarbonate casing is coloured all the way through in the manufacturing process, so scratches, dents or marks from everyday use will not show up.
The N9 has a 3.9in super AMOLED display, 1GB of RAM and an 8-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens. It is the struggling company's first smartphone to run the open sourced MeeGo operating system, which is a joint collaboration between Nokia's Maemo project and Intel's Moblin software.
Other features include a front-facing camera for video calls, free lifetime navigation and free downloadable maps worldwide through the Nokia Maps application, and the standard connectivity suite of Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS. The Nokia N9 has built-in Near Field Communications (NFC) technology, but its not for wireless payments — the technology enables users to pair compatible Bluetooth devices by tapping them against the phone.
