10Mbps shot restarts Wi-Fi wars

Sydney Wi-Fi provider BigAir has launched a 10Mbps residential broadband service, the fastest in the country, but with a significant price tag attached.

The 10Mbps service, available to some apartment buildings in Sydney's east, costs $499.95 per month. Downloads are limited to 100GB.

BigAir targets high-rise buildings with its wireless services (those with about 70 apartments or more) to minimize installation costs.

The ISP uses base stations to provide wireless access to customers. Accordingly, a building must have line-of-sight communication with a base station to use the service.

BigAir will also launch VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services this year for business and residential users, said BigAir joint managing director, Jason Ashton.

A base station in Parramatta, to service Sydney's western suburbs, is scheduled for this financial quarter as well.

The company may expand its network to another city at the end of this year, Ashton said.

As the Maserati or BMW of laptops, it would fit perfectly in the hands of a professional needing firepower under the hood, sophistication and class on the surface, and gaming prowess (sports mode if you will) in between.
