Lack of displays could cause iPad 3 shortages - report

2048 x 1536-pixel displays in short supply, it is claimed

The third-generation iPad is likely to suffer from stock shortages due to an insufficient supply of high-res displays, it has been claimed.

The problem apparently lies with the three suppliers Apple has contracted to provide the 2048 x 1536-pixel displays - Sharp, LG and Samsung - who have not been able to ramp up production to required levels, Digitimes reckons.

This could cause problems for Apple's stock levels, especially if claims that it had increased its orders from manufacturers made by Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu are correct.

According to the Digitimes report, Apple may not be able to supply sufficient numbers of the next-generation iPad until the second quarter. The same outlet has issued reports this morning claiming that Apple will launch 16GB and 32GB versions of the iPad 3 - alongside an 8GB iPad 2 - next week, and also that Apple is planning to put a smaller iPad into production in Q3.

And yeat another Digitimes report this morning claims that Apple has dropped the price of the iPad 2 by $50, though a visit to the US Apple Store shows no sign of any reductions, with prices beginning at $499, not $449 as Digitimes states.

Prices in the UK are still the same too, with a 16GB Wi-Fi only model starting at £399 inc VAT, but we'll keep an eye out for any changes, so stay tuned.

I've had a multifunction printer in the office going on 10 years now. It was a neat bit of kit back in the day -- print, copy, scan, fax -- when printing over WiFi felt a bit like magic. It’s seen better days though and an upgrade’s well overdue. This HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 looks like it ticks all the same boxes: print, copy, scan, and fax. (Really? Does anyone fax anything any more? I guess it's good to know the facility’s there, just in case.) Printing over WiFi is more-or- less standard these days.
