Apple wins 37 new patents and files for Siri patent

Patents involve the iPhone's antenna, MacBook speakers, and the iOS map app

Apple has been granted 37 new patents, which were published by the US Patent and Trademark Office on Tuesday. Apple also filed an application for a patent involving the iPhone 4S's Siri feature.

The new patents include those covering the iPhone's stainless steel bezel antenna structure, the MacBook's speaker grill structure, the pinning feature in iOS device's Maps app, among several others.

One of the Apples new patents is titled "Antenna for handheld electronic devices with conductive bezels", and relates to the stainless steel antenna found on the iPhone 4, reports Patently Apple. A similar patent was also granted to Apple, titled "Antennas with tuning structure for handheld devices."

Five of Apple's new patents relate to design. They cover Apple's Cinema Display, the retail packaging iPod Shuffle, the MacBook Air Reinstall Drive, an interface design related to the iPod nano, and a battery related design.

The 30 remaining patents won by Apple this week cover security, the speaker grill structures in a MacBook, Apple's Maps + Compass iOS app, buttons, batteries, LCD modules, power, temperature, AirPlay, metadata searching, charging, contact information updating via SMS, colour correction and more.

Apple has also filed an application for a patent relating to Siri. Patently Apple reports that the patent covers the sound you hear when activating the iPhone 4S's Siri feature. The patent application states that the sound consists of a rapid two-tone repetition for the note C sharp.

If you'd like to see a display of the 317 patents Apple's late co-founder, Steve Jobs, acquired throughout his career, the US Patent and Trademark Office has contributed to an exhibition at the Smithsonian's S. Dillon Ripley Center in Washington.

The Patents and Trademarks of Steve Jobs: Art and Technology that Changed the World will feature objects from the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, including Apple products from the company's early days, as well as NeXT devices. The exhibition will open on 11 May.

I've had a multifunction printer in the office going on 10 years now. It was a neat bit of kit back in the day -- print, copy, scan, fax -- when printing over WiFi felt a bit like magic. It’s seen better days though and an upgrade’s well overdue. This HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 looks like it ticks all the same boxes: print, copy, scan, and fax. (Really? Does anyone fax anything any more? I guess it's good to know the facility’s there, just in case.) Printing over WiFi is more-or- less standard these days.
