Registrars set up group to lobby InternetNZ

Lobbying the lobby group is the aim of a new registrars only group. The group was set up to better coordinate the various points of view of registrars as InternetNZ, which was formerly the Internet Society of New Zealand (ISOCNZ), and The New Zealand Internet Registry Ltd., better known as Domainz, move to a shared registry system (SRS).

Domain names are stored in the register, currently operated by Domainz. At last year's AGM members of InternetNZ voted to operate the registry on an SRS model, where registrars - those organisations that register domain names for end users - would have equal access to the register itself. That equal access extends to Domainz, although the finer points of the argument are still to be worked out.

"We don't want it seen as a kind of 'here to kick Domainz's butt" thing. That's not it at all," says Peter Mott, owner of 2Day Internet Ltd. and founder of the Registrar Interest Group.

"We're not a separate legal entity, although we could become one in the future. At the moment we're a mailing list with a simple goal - let Domainz and InternetNZ know what we as registrars want from both management and technical points of view."

Mott says the internet has been built on the basis of sharing knowledge and understanding, both at a concept level and also at a technical level, and he hopes the registrar group will continue in that theme. Interested registrars can find more detail at the group's website.

If you can afford the price tag, it is well worth the money. It out performs any other laptop I have tried for gaming, and the transportable design and incredible display also make it ideal for work.
