Samsung and Foxtel team up for Internet TV effort

Foxtel on Internet TV only $20 per month for basic package

Foxtel has launched a streaming Internet TV subscription on some Samsung Smart TVs, with a range of channels at a much cheaper price than its existing cable service.

Adding to Samsung's existing Smart TV features, the standard definition Foxtel on Internet TV service can be configured with up to 30 channels. The base package of 10 channels is $19.50 per month, and can be bolstered with additional Movies, Sports and Entertainment channel packs.

There is no installation or setup fee, the service has no long-term contracts, and can be cancelled within any given month. As with other Foxtel services, a London 2012 Olympics package with eight channels can be purchased for a one-off $50 fee.

Australia has traditionally been an afterthought for video-on-demand providers, and access to streaming first-run TV shows has been limited in the past. Foxtel on Internet TV will only be available to users with a broadband service, with at least 2MBps of bandwidth or higher.

The service is only available to purchasers of a selected range of 2011 and 2012 Samsung Smart TVs including Series 5, Series 6, Series 7 and Series 8 models. The service is unmetered for Telstra BigPond customers, but users on other ISPs will see the streaming service contribute to their monthly download quotas.
