HTC victorious over Apple in slide to unlock battle

Court rules in favour of HTC in slide to unlock patent dispute

HTC has claimed a win against Apple in a slide to unlock patent dispute.

The judge at the High Court in London ruled in HTC's favour say it has not infringed on four patents which Apple claimed it did. He said the slide to unlock feature was an obvious development of a feature seen on an early Swedish handset, according to the BBC.

HTC said: "HTC is pleased with the ruling, which provides further confirmation that Apple's claims against HTC are without merit. We remain disappointed that Apple continues to favour competition in the courtroom over competition in the marketplace."

As well as the slide to unlock feature the case also involved dispute over the use of a multilingual keyboard, a system to determine single and multi-finger touches and allowing a user to drag an object beyond the limit of the screen and it then bouncing back into place.

The judge said that the first three patents were invalid and the fourth did not apply to HTC's devices. The slide to unlock feature was first seen on the Neonode N1 which showed a padlock and the words 'right sweep to unlock'.

Apple has been more successful in its lawsuits with Samsung recently. The firm has successfully put injunctions on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet and Galaxy Nexus smartphone.
