Optus has expanded the availability of its 4G business services utilising its 4G FDD-LTE network to Sydney and Perth, and upgraded its 3G network coverage as part of a larger enhancement project.

At a press event in Sydney, Optus Networks managing director, Günther Ottendorfer, said the main aim of the enhancement is to deliver stronger coverage to its customers.

According to Ottendorfer, the investment will enable small business, enterprise and Government customers in Sydney and Perth to experience Optus 4G USB mobile broadband and mobile Wi-Fi hotspots.

“Australian businesses want fast, reliable mobile broadband that lets them work flexibly, enabling new and exciting ways to interact and transact with their customers.

“Our investment in next-generation 4G mobile technology provides businesses with the choice of faster speeds over 4G, now backed by a stronger 3G network,” Ottendorfer said.

Optus has made available two 4G products – the Optus 4G USB and the Optus 4G mobile Wi-Fi modem – that will provide customers with 4G connectivity where it is available and switchover to high-speed HSPA and HSPA+ technology across the Optus 3G mobile network.

The company has also upgraded more than 1000 3G mobile sites for stronger 3G performance across regional centres and major capital cities including Sydney, Melbourne, Darwin and Perth.

“Over the next twelve months, Optus will continue to roll out 3G coverage enhancements to the remainder of the network including Brisbane, Newcastle, Wollongong and Adelaide,” Ottendorfer said.

As for future plans, Optus claimed its acquisition of VividWireless has enabled it to open its trial network to prepare for a major national 4G TD-LTE network roll out in 2013.

“As Australians rely more on smartphones and other connected devices, our goal is to have one single integrated 4G network that utilises the latest LTE technologies,” he said.

Ottendorfer also mentioned plans for handsets utilising its 4G network will be announced during a broader consumer launch.
