EA Showcase 2012: Crytek brings Prophet, Seven Wonders to Crysis 3

Developer aims to raise the bar for what is considered state of the art with the third instalment to Crysis

With the original Crysis setting the benchmark for graphics and gameplay, and Crysis 2 marking the debut of the series on consoles, the stakes are high for next year’s release of Crysis 3.

Although Crysis 3 uses CryEngine 3, same as the one used in Crysis 2, Crytek producer, Michael Elliot Read, says added work has been made to it.

Crysis 3 also marks the return of Prophet, the protagonist from the first game who was absent from the sequel.

“The story begins with an evil corporation that has built a Nanodome around New York City to protect the public from the alien threat,” Read said.

The individual locations in Crysis 3 have been dubbed as "seven wonders” for their unique setup and look.

For example, various parts of New York are depicted in the game in a decrepit state, such as Times Square.

The game has also received directorial input from filmmaker Albert Hughes, best known for 1993’s Menace II Society and 2001’s From Hell.

“Crysis 3 is about adaptive warfare and technology,” Read said.

The earlier perk system has been changed to Nanosuit upgrades this time around, and Read says the game has a three tiered AI system to provide the player with a challenge.

New weapons such as the Predator bow can be fired while cloaked, while the Typhoon, assault weapon fires 500 rounds a second.

“The Scar Mod 2 gun can be customised by the player,” Read said.

“There are five alien weapons in total, including the Ceph heavy mortar and reaper cannon.”

Hunter hunted

On the multiplayer front, Crysis comes with a “hunter mode,” which works by selecting two players to be permanently cloaked with bows, and the rest are CELL troopers.

When a cell trooper is killed, they are turned into a hunter and they in turn go after the remaining CELL members.

“There are 12 maps for multiplayer, based on the seven wonders found in the game,” Read said.

In total there are eight multiplayer game modes for 16 player gameplay on PC and 12 on consoles.

“New weapons and attachments can be found, and the unlockable perk system allows for hundreds of combinations,” Read said.

With dedicated servers for PC and peer-to-peer matching on console, Read says the game comes with “a redefined multiplayer experience over Crysis 2.”

Crysis is slated for a February 21 release in Australia.
