Twitter has added a set of filters to its TweetDeck application, giving users an ability to finely sift through an ever-growing number of messages.
The software update, released on Tuesday for the Web version of TweetDeck and Chrome, allows users to set a filter to show tweets only with certain words or tweets, and excluding specific words, according to a blog post. Another filter lets people choose if they want to show retweets in a column, when someone promotes someone else's message on their feed.
Also added is a drop-down menu labeled "Showing," which displays messages with images or videos or both, messages with links or simply all tweets.
TweetDeck, which was acquired by Twitter in May 2011, said the improvements are part of an effort to bring capabilities that were in the Adobe AIR version of its product into the Web version of TweetDeck. Over the past six months, TweetDeck has released weekly updates, it said.
Those improvements have included real-time updates of messages, keyboard shortcuts, bug fixes and other performance upgrades.
Earlier this month, Twitter said it would modify its search engine to include tweets more than a week old, a move it said will help users uncover better content. The company also updated the search function in its iOS and Android mobile applications to return a blend of tweets, photos and people in a single stream of results, rather than having separate tabs for tweets and people.
