Rise in iPads running iOS 7 seen in web logs, preview at WWDC likely

Various sites are seeing a spike in devices running iOS 7

There has been a recent spike in traffic from devices that appear to be using iOS 7.

Mobile content company Onswipe noted that these devices running iOS 7 started appearing more frequently around 30 April.

A number of websites claim to have seen a similar spike around that time, including MacRumors and ArsTechnica. Ars claims the majority of these visits were from iPads running iOS 7.

MacRumors claims that the hits come from Apple's block of IP addresses.

This appears to confirm reports that Apple staff are working overtime to finalize iOS 7 in time for launch (or at least previews) at WWDC on 10 June.

We wonder why part of the testing involves reading Mac websites, perhaps the Apple staff working overtime to finish work on iOS 7 are checking up on the rumours to see what they are supposed to be doing. Or maybe they are just laughing at what the press (ourselves included) are writing about the new operating system.

Reports claim that iOS 7 will have a major user interface change, described as "very, very flat" and ditching all skeuomorphic design elements. The interface changes will include a redesign of Apple's native app icons, as well as new tool bars, tab bars and more, according to sources.

Expectation that iOS will see a complete redesign is put down to the new leadership of Apple design guru Jony Ive. Following an executive shakeup in October that saw then head of iOS software Scott Forstall leave the company, Ive has taken on more responsibilities, as the leader of human interface at Apple. This means that, as well as hardware design leadership, Ive now has more involvement with the design of iOS and other Apple platforms.

Ive's promotion sparked speculation that Apple may be considering dropping its skeuomorphic design elements in favour of a cleaner, more minimalist design.
