Unveiled globally at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, Spain, back in February, the Fonepad is a 7in Android tablet that also functions as a regular smartphone.

The device is described by ASUS as "a tablet that retains the flexibility of a smartphone, but removes the need to carry two different devices".

ASUS will sell two models of the Fonepad in Australia, both with 3G connectivity. The 8GB model will retail for $329, while the larger 32GB model will sell for $399.

The Fonepad has borrowed plenty from the Google Nexus 7, a device also manufactured by ASUS. It weighs the same (340g) and has almost identical dimensions. It also uses the same IPS screen with a resolution of 1280x800 and a pixel density of 216ppi.

The Fonepad is powered by an a 1.2GHz single-core Intel Atom Z2420 processor, has 1GB of RAM and a PowerVR SGX540 GPU. There's also a microSD card slot to expand the 8GB of onboard memory, a non-removable 4270mAh battery and a 3.2-megapixel rear-facing camera.

Both models sold in Australia also feature a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera.

ASUS Chairman, Jonney Shih, released a typical statement on the Fonepad following its global launch earlier this year.

"It is ideal to have a larger screen with entertainment, social media and other online activities now playing an increasingly important part in our mobile lifestyles."

"The incorporation of 3G mobile data with full telephony support, makes the Fonepad the perfect combination of a tablet and phone in one single device."

The Fonepad doesn't have 4G connectivity, relying on the standard 3G network for data. It will work on all major Australian 3G networks including Telstra, Optus and Vodafone.

The Fonepad will be sold in Australia through various retailers from early June, though the company has not revealed any further information on specific retail availability.
