Apple unveiled iOS 7, the latest version of its mobile operating system for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, at its WWDC 2013 conference last night. As expected, iOS 7's design is a major departure from iOS 6, with a flatter, cleaner look and a vibrant palette of pastel-tinged colours and translucency effects. "You can actually see behind the icons," said Tim Apple boss Tim Cook.

Which iPhones will be able to run iOS 7?

Apple has said that iOS 7 will be compatible with the iPhone 4, the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 5. If the iPhone 6 launches before iOS 7, we can safely assume that it will be compatible with iOS 7 too.

How to update an iPhone to iOS 7

Apple iOS 7 will be released to the general public in the autumn, and will be pushed to all iOS users at the same time: it's a free update, and you simply need to accept the update to begin downloading the new OS. But you don't have to accept the update if you don't want to - just click no.

If you then change your mind and wish to update to iOS 7 in the future (or if for some reason you aren't asked if you want to update on the morning iOS 7 launches), you can go to Settings > General > Software Update and click Install Now.

Past history suggests that accepting the update on the first day iOS 7 is available may take longer because of the heavy traffic on Apple's servers - this was a particular problem with iOS 5, but Apple's servers handled things a little better last year with iOS 6.

As the Maserati or BMW of laptops, it would fit perfectly in the hands of a professional needing firepower under the hood, sophistication and class on the surface, and gaming prowess (sports mode if you will) in between.
