Surveying the pre-order scene for Xbox One, PlayStation 4

Some retailers say they're already selling out of their launch day allotments of the next-generation gaming consoles.

Sony's Playstation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One may not launch until the end of the year, but some retailers are already selling out of their launch day allotments.

Still, if you're set on being the first to own one of the new game consoles, don't fret. You've still got several options for securing a PS4 or Xbox One on launch day.

Playstation 4 pre-orders

Amazon's "Launch Day" edition of the PS4, which was guaranteed to arrive on the day of release, is no longer available as a standalone console for $400. If you're willing to spend $100 more, you can still get a PS4 launch bundle with either Battlefield 4, Killzone: Shadow Fall, Knack, or Watch Dogs, along with a year of Playstation Plus at a $10 discount.

Standalone PS4 systems are also available from Best Buy, Target.com, and Sony's online store. Employees at two Best Buy locations near me said that online orders would be available to pick up on launch day. It's unclear when Target.com and Sony will ship pre-orders. (Target's brick-and-mortar stores are not offering pre-orders, but are selling the PS4 on a first-come, first-serve basis.)

GameStop's website is only selling Playstation 4 bundles. However, two store representatives near me said they're still taking pre-orders on the system itself, with availability on launch day.

Xbox One pre-orders

The Xbox One pre-order situation is a little easier to decipher, thanks to the "Day One Edition" that's being offered to those who pre-order early. This version includes a commemorative controller, premium packaging, and a special achievement for the same $500 price as the regular Xbox One. As of this writing, the Xbox One Day One Edition is still available from Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, and the Microsoft Store.

GameStop is sold out of the Day One Edition online, and individual stores have stopped taking pre-orders, according to Polygon. Bundles are still available online, but not for the Day One Edition.

Keep in mind that neither Microsoft nor Sony have announced firm release dates for their respective game consoles. Microsoft says the Xbox One will ship in November, and Sony is promising a holiday launch. Any actual dates that you might see on retailers' websites are placeholders.

As the Maserati or BMW of laptops, it would fit perfectly in the hands of a professional needing firepower under the hood, sophistication and class on the surface, and gaming prowess (sports mode if you will) in between.
