Lexmark T622 and StapleSmart Finisher

This strange, rather giraffe-like beast is a corporate laser printer. Designed to churn out 40 monochrome pages per minute at up to 1200x1200 dpi, it sports an unusual accessory - an automatic stapler.mThe StapleSmart Finisher is an optional accessory for Lexmark's new T622 corporate laser printer, and allows the automatic production of collated documents stapled at one corner - potentially a boon for office workers who need to produce many multi-page reports. The stapler is capable of working with at least 10 sheets of paper at a time; however, our early model came without official specifications, and we didn't wish to break the only StapleSmart Finisher in the country, so a maximum thickness test wasn't attempted.

The installation process was fairly straightforward. Even though the hardcopy manual was missing from the box, it was fairly obvious where everything went. Lifting a plastic panel from the top of the printer reveals a mounting point for the StapleSmart finisher, which is simply lowered into place. The driver installation program still defaults to non-USB options, which made setup of this non-parallel-port equipped printer a bit more confusing than need be. The target market for the T622 is heavy duty corporate work, though, which means it is likely to be set up by experienced system administrators.

Once assembled and set up, the T622 produced impressively fast results, with a measured continuous print speed of 38 pages per minute. The print quality is very crisp and clear, though perhaps the pure black tones could be a little darker. Somewhat louder than a personal laser printer, it's a good high-speed business workhorse.

The recommended retail prices had not yet been set at the time of writing, but it is expected to be around $4500 for the network-enabled version of the base T622 printer, and about $1700 for the StapleSmart finisher.
