AMD unwraps first Duron chip for notebooks

The Mobile AMD Duron processor is the first in a new line of mobile processors that the California-based chip manufacturer plans to introduce in 2001, AMD said.

The 700MHz and 600MHz processors are priced at $US123 and $US75 respectively, each in 1,000-unit quantities.

The chips are being manufactured in AMD's factory in Austin, Texas. Mobile AMD Duron features 192K bytes of cache memory and a high-speed 200MHz front side bus, as well as what the company refers to as "enhanced 3D technology".

Also, according to AMD's statement, Japanese PC vendor NEC said it will use the 700MHz variant of the chip in its "LaVie U" series of notebooks. The notebooks will begin shipping this month.
