Dotcom blowout makes for porn boom

Dotcom failures are turning their hand, so to speak, to the online porn industry.

While the rest of the Internet economy struggles to pull in the dollars, the adult entertainment arena has been dubbed "virtually recession-proof", according to Charles Heunemann, managing director of Web filtering company SurfControl.

This is causing many failed dotcom entrepreneurs to set their sights on blue sites, as they try and get a piece of the estimated $9 billion industry.

"With the failure of many Web shopping sites in Australia, and indeed all over the world, we've learned that consumers by and large aren't ready to take the plunge into buying on the Internet," he said. "But with porn, it seems to be different."

According to Heunemann, the boom has even resulted in online courses being offered to budding porn site operators.

Heunemann warns, however, that the increase of online porn offerings will result in more "porn cyber-bludging" in the workplace, creating a challenge for the HR department.

"We've seen a number of cases in Australia where employees have been dismissed for looking at online porn at work and with more and more sites on offer, the likelihood is that porn cyber-bludging will also increase," he claimed.
