iPhone 6 'to feature slow-motion video recording'

iOS 7 code points to 120fps 'Mogul' camera feature in iPhone 6/iPhone 5S

The iPhone 6 or iPhone 5S may feature a 'super slow-mo' video mode called Mogul, if references in iOS 7's beta code is any indication.

Regular iOS 7 code-comber Hamza Sood has unearthed another interesting clue in the iOS 7 beta: references to a high-speed camera mode called 'Mogul', which would enable an iPhone to record video at the exceptionally high speed of 120 frames per second.

Video recorded at 120fps can be played back in 'super slow mo' with no loss of clarity - it's the sort of footage beloved of sports broadcasters for showing sweat flying from tennis players' brows or bats vibrating in the hands of cricketers. And it's very cool to watch.

9to5Mac did some testing and analysis on the code strings and concluded that the feature would be offered alongside iOS 7's current four camera options. However, the hardware of the iPhone 5 does not support the feature, leading to speculation that it's been readied for the next generation: the iPhone 5S or iPhone 6, expected to launch in the autumn (some believe that the iPhone 5S will launch first, representing a minor upgrade on the iPhone 5, and will then be followed by a more substantive iPhone 6 upgrade).

As 9to5Mac observes, Apple likes to include at least one 'cool' feature when making otherwise minor hardware upgrades: the iPhone 4S and iPhone 3GS both included interesting new features to compensate for the lack of major physical changes: video and voice control in the case of the 3GS, and Siri on the iPhone 4S.

Hamza Sood has previously found references in the iOS 7 beta code that point to deeper LinkedIn integration and offline voice dictation.
