Canon’s MV600 range replaces its MV500 series of DV camcorders. The entry-level MV600i features a Canon 18x zoom lens and 360x digital zoom as well as a 2.5in colour LCD and colour viewfinder, seven recording modes and a night mode. The mid-range MV630i has a 20x optical/400x digital zoom lens, a USB interface, and an 8MB SD memory card for capturing stills, movie clips and adding digital effects to video.
The top model in the 600i range is the MV650i (shown), with a 22x optical/440x digital zoom lens. The MV650i’s Super Night Mode can produce high-quality video recordings in virtual darkness, with a white LED assist lamp to provide additional illumination. Conveniently positioned illuminated (in a choice of six neon colours) control buttons above the LCD viewscreen add unique style to the MV650i and assist when filming in low light.
If you want to use your camcorder like a digital still camera, the MV600i is limited to recording still images to DV tape only. The MV630i and MV650i have the ability to record JPEG images to a removable MultiMediaCard or Secure Digital card and come with an 8MB SD card as standard. However, be aware that the quality of the stills (1024x768 pixels) will be below a normal megapixel digital still camera.
The Canon ‘i’ series offer both DV and analog input/output, allowing you to upload edited footage or graphics from your computer, or other digital devices, to the camcorder. You can also incorporate analog video data from your old camcorder or VCR into new digital recordings.
Each camcorder in the MV600i Series has a high resolution 800,000 pixel CCD and includes a double-sided aspherical element lens to ensure optimal colour balance and low image distortion. This element also ensures that consistent sharpness is maintained in all images captured.
The standard Li-Ion battery will record about one and a half hours of video if the camcorder is used with the viewfinder rather than the LCD screen, dropping to under an hour if you like to use the LCD screen all the time.
If you want an easy-to-use camcorder without all the bells and whistles, the MV600i is great value; however; if you want to record Web quality video and take digital stills, you may want to consider the MV630i or MV650i.
