Moto X engraving put on hold, citing quality concerns

Motorola has temporarily canned the personalized engraving function for Moto X.

Citing quality concerns, Motorola has temporarily nixed the personalized engraving function for Moto X.

According to PCWorld contributor JR Raphael (and later confirmed by The Verge), Motorola is delaying the engraving function because the results from beta testing were not up to company standards. The majority of custom design features will still be available when the phone launches on AT&T this Friday, and the company hopes to reinstate the feature at a later time.

The lack of engraving is an unfortunate failing as the suite of customization options was one of the few features that truly separated the Moto X from the rest of the pack.

When the much-anticipated handset--it's the first phone that was purely a product of Motorola after Google's acquisition of the company in 2011--made its debut earlier this month, it failed to make the initial impact that Google/Motorola may have hoped for. That may be owing to the fact that so many of its new features were already introduced a mere few weeks earlier in the Motorola Droid.

However, one of the cool things that set the Moto X apart was the ability to customize your own phone through the online Moto Maker, which allows customers to choose their phone's color, accents, out-of the-box wallpaper, and an engraved message.

Unfortunately, consumer hoping to personalize their phones with a little pep, snark, or personality will have to wait just a bit longer.
