Aussie carriers baulk at Samsung's Mega Galaxy

The Korean giant has confirmed that the Galaxy Mega 6.3, a handset it describes as "a device that combines the portability and convenience of a smartphone with the power, multitasking capabilities and extensive viewing experience of a tablet," will be sold exclusively through JB Hi-Fi stores.

The Galaxy Mega 6.3 will not be sold through traditional carriers like Telstra, Optus and Vodafone and will instead retail for $599 as an outright-only smartphone.

Samsung Australia's vice president of telecommunications, Tyler McGee, said there is growing demand for larger devices like the Galaxy Mega that blur the line between smartphone and tablet.

"With the success of the Galaxy Note range, there is growing demand in Australia for devices that offer the portability and connectivity of a smartphone with the features and productivity of a tablet."

"With the launch of the Galaxy Mega, Samsung is continuing to offer consumers more of what they want, with a smartphone featuring a stunning 6.3-inch HD screen."

At 88mm wide and almost 198mm tall, the Galaxy Mega 6.3 is one of the biggest smartphones on the market, easily dwarfing Samsung's Galaxy Note II.

It's also larger than the 6.1in Huawei Ascend Mate, a phone that Huawei claimed had the "biggest screen in the world" back in February.

Compared to Samsung's flagship Galaxy S4, the Galaxy Mega 6.3 is a mid-range device. It has a lower, 720p screen resolution, less RAM (1.5GB compared to 2GB) and a slower, dual core processor.

The display is also a regular TFT panel compared with the Galaxy S4's super AMOLED screen technology.

The Galaxy Mega 6.3 sold in Australia is the GT-I9205 model which supports the 1800MHz 4G network band used by Telstra, Optus and Vodafone.

The device comes with 8GB of internal memory but Samsung includes a 4GB microSD card in the sales package.

Other features include an 8 megapixel rear-facing camera for still photos and full HD video recording, a 1.9 megapixel front-facing camera for video calls and a large 3200mAh removeable battery.

In addition to JB Hi-Fi, Samsung confirmed that the Galaxy Mega 6.3 is also available now through its Experience Stores in Sydney and Melbourne.
