HTC unveils a pair of midrange phones and a wee little bluetooth boombox

HTC has just introduced the Desire 601 and 300 to fill out its mid-range offerings

While HTC has garnered accolades for its flagship One Android phone, the Korean manufacturer appears to have shifted its priorities to mid-range devices for the time being, with a pair of new additions to its decidedly second-tier Desire line of handsets.

The HTC Desire 601 might be described as the premier entry of a mid-range line. The 601 will be the first phone from the Desire line to offer LTE compatibility. Like the One or its smaller mini sibling, the 601 comes equipped with dual front stereo BoomSound.

Under the hood, the 601 falls short of the mighty Ones with a still-respectable Snapdragon 400 dual-core processor, though its 4.5-inch display is a relatively paltry 245 ppi. However, the most immediate difference between the 601 and its top-shelf cousins can be found in its use of cheaper molded polycarbonate body in place of the One's signature aluminum suit of armor.

The 601 will run on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and come equipped with a 5-megapixel camera, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of internal storage.

HTC also unveiled the Desire 300, which the company refers to as an entry-level smartphone. The 300 has a 217 ppi 4.3-inch WVGA display and runs on a 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor. The phone will sport a 5-megapixel rear camera, 512MB of RAM, and only 4GB of internal storage, and no LTE connectivity.

HTC certainly didn't forget the HTC One entirely. The company also unveiled the HTC BoomBass, a small Bluetooth-enabled subwoofer with a dedicated amplifier that comes in the form of a tiny stylish cube. The small box will stream audio directly from your device and enhance lower range frequencies through a 3.0+EDR speaker as a compliment to the One's in-phone BoomSound system--ideal for those times when you want others in the room to enjoy your phone's music library.

The Desire 601 will be available across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa beginning in October with no official word on North American availability. The Desire 300 will be available in "select markets" in October. Users can pick up their own BoomBass from the HTC Accessory Store beginning in mid-October.

As the Maserati or BMW of laptops, it would fit perfectly in the hands of a professional needing firepower under the hood, sophistication and class on the surface, and gaming prowess (sports mode if you will) in between.
