The new position will solidify IDG Communications' dominance as the leading IT media company with Gerholt responsible for online strategy and implementation.
"We at IDG have been among Australia's most prolific web businesses in recent months," said Don Kennedy, managing director. "We have opened a major vertical portal for the new economy companies and one for enterprise IT professionals. We've built the country's largest IT training portal; we operate Internet sites for four of the nation's largest IT user groups, and we are only weeks away from launching Australia's only portal dedicated to the reseller channel.
"Determining the right course to take in the constantly changing online environment is critical to IDG's continued success. The appointment of Ben Gerholt to the position of Online Director will ensure the refinement of our strategy, the successful implementation of new projects, and the smooth operation and expansion of existing online properties."
Gerholt's appointment follows a period as Editorial Director of IDG's PC Division.
During this time the PC Division:
successfully relaunched PC World with a new printed magazine design and editorial formula, a new Web site, and a new design and packaging for the cover CD-ROM.
launched LinuxWorld.com.au in April. LinuxWorld.com.au targets all Linux audiences and includes print and CD-ROM components in PC World.
launched eComWorld, a special stage-by-stage guide to help small and medium businesses join the online economy, in June. eComWorld runs as a monthly supplement to PC World and is also marketed as a standalone book to small and medium businesses.
Gerholt will continue in his role as Editorial Director for the PC Division with reduced hands-on involvement.
