Dick Smith to exclusively sell Leap Motion sensor device in Australia

Leap Motion, a computer hardware sensor device that supports hand and motion input, has gone on sale exclusively in Australia through Dick Smith retail stores, the company has announced.

The Leap Motion Controller is a USB peripheral that works with any Mac (OS X 10.6 and above) or Windows 7 or 8 based computer, and allows users to control a number of applications using hand and motion gestures.

The device senses a persons hands and fingers, and effectively allows the user to point, wave, reach and grab to interact with applications developed for the device in the Leap Motion app store.

The Leap Motion goes on sale in Australia today, and will be exclusively sold through over 270 Dick Smith stores across the country, and online through the retailer's Web site.

Leap Motion's President and COO, Andy Miller, said the presence of Dick Smith across Australia, and the fact that the retailer manages the electronics department in David Jones department stores, made Dick Smith a good fit to exclusively sell the product Down Under.

"Dick Smith has more than 270 retail stores, a presence in many high-profile David Jones stores and a popular online retail site, making it the perfect partner for Leap Motion to launch in Australia"

"It’s also an ideal place for even more people to experience the magic of using just their hands in the air to play, learn, and create on their computers."

In addition to Dick Smith retail stores and online sales, the Leap Motion will also be sold through the retailer's new Move concept store in Bondi, which opened last month.

The Move store is described as a "fusion of fashion and consumer electronics" and claims to be targeted at brand conscious consumers.

The Leap Motion Controller launched in the US back in July. The company claims its users have downloaded more than one million apps from the Leap Motion Airspace Store in the first three weeks after its launch.

The Leap Motion is distributed exclusively by Australian wholesaler Blonde Robot, and is priced at $129.95.

As the Maserati or BMW of laptops, it would fit perfectly in the hands of a professional needing firepower under the hood, sophistication and class on the surface, and gaming prowess (sports mode if you will) in between.
