Beats launches Studio headphones in Australia

Evolutionary device features adjustments to both sound and design

Beats Electronics has launched the new iteration of its Beats Studio over-ear headphones which resemble a natural evolutionary step in the company’s product portfolio. Like its predecessor, the new version promises a premium sound experience coupled with carefully crafted aesthetics, and a price to match.

That’s the key, though: it is a high-end consumer-level product, and it is marketed as such.

“With the original Studio headphone we set out to prove that people all around the world care enough about sound to invest in it,” Beats Electronics co-founder, Jimmy Iovine, said. “Now we are taking it a step further.”

The new Beats Studio headphones feature Beats Electronics’ new custom digital software, Beats Acoustic Engine (BAE), which promises a “reengineered and reimagined” Beats sound experience. The software intends to produce a more balanced experience to remove what has been sometimes criticised as overpowering bass. Users can expect BAE to create a less biased sound which does not prioritise certain levels over others.

Beats has built the new Studio headphones with adaptive noise cancellation (ANC) which operates in two modes. When the device is being used with the supplied audio cable, sound quality and noise cancellation are balanced. Once unplugged, the headphones provide what Beats Electronics describes as a “more aggressive noise reduction experience” where the design works with the ANC to isolate sound and improve acoustics.

A key change implemented in the design of the new Beats Studio headphones is the inclusion of an in-built Lithium-Ion battery, which the vendor claims will last for 20 hours. The battery can be recharged via a USB port or outlet. Previous models forced users to swap batteries. A five-light LED battery fuel gauge indicates how much juice is remaining, while an automatic on/off feature shuts down the headphones once the audio jack is unplugged from the headphones (unfortunately, it stays on if plugged out from the source device).

Like all Beats Electronics products, the new Studio headphones are as much a fashion item as a sound device. According to the vendor, the new design contains lighter materials, increased strength, and improved flexibility. An “ergonomic adjustment mechanism” around the ear cups allows them to adjust on the head without being restricted by a single floating pivot. No screws or straight lines are visible. Beats Electronics claims the headphones weigh 263g.

The new Beats Studio over-ear headphones are available via the Beats Electronics Australia web site and Beats Electronics retailers for $429, and are available in black, red, and white.
