LG's latest curved TV is a 105-inch world record breaker

LG will unveil its 105in curved LCD TV at CES, claims a world first in screen size for such a TV

LG will be showing off what it claims to be the world's first 21:9, 105in curved LCD television at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in January. LG says that its 105UB9 LCD TV is, so far, officially the largest TV with a curved screen to ever be manufactured.

The mammoth screen is ultra high definition (4K), and will be capable of displaying a resolution of 5120x2160 pixels. Apart from being perfectly adept at displaying cinemascope movies, LG says the extra width of the screen will allow viewers to access content on the side of the screen without blocking any content that's currently playing.

LG has used LCD technology for this TV, rather than organic light emitting diodes (OLED), and the company says it had to overcome problems regarding the delivery of uniform colour and brightness across the entire screen. It says that uneven backlighting was remedied by refining the pixel circuit technology to eliminate colour leakage and to improve viewing from wide angles. OLED technology is generally preferred for curved TVs because a backlight is not required. The pixels in an OLED TV generate their own light when they receive an electrical pulse.

It's not known when or if this TV will be available in Australia. In a press release, Lambro Skropidis, General Manager for Marketing at LG Electronics Australia said "the 105-inch curved panel is proof of our continued leadership in the next generation display market" and that LG “will continue to drive the next generation TV market”.
