Vodafone adds six Asian nations to $5 daily international roaming plan

Customers on Vodafone Red plans now able to use service in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, Japan, and Thailand

Vodafone has extended the reach of its $5 daily international roaming plan, adding six Asian countries to its coverage.

The telecommunications provider has reached agreements with partner carriers in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, Japan, and Thailand, allowing Vodafone Red customers to use the service from January 23 if they opt in before leaving Australia.

The addition of the six Asian countries brings the telco’s total coverage to 46 nations.

“Asia is a popular destination for Australians taking a holiday, with Bali and Thailand among the top spots for Australians taking short overseas trips,” Vodafone chief marketing officer, Kim Clarke, said.

“Customers need to be able to access everything they would normally use on their smartphones like contacts, their email and apps. With Vodafone Red, our customers can use their phone just as they would from home for $5 extra per day.”

Clarke also said the service aims to eliminate the need to purchase SIM cards or use hotel Wi-Fi services while away.

The $5 daily plan was launched in July last year and first applied to the United Kingdom, United States, and New Zealand.

The service works by ticketing Vodafone Red customers $5 per day of use, with all data, calls and sent text messages charged according to the rates of the their existing plan.

Vodafone added a further 34 European countries to the mix in October, with Belgium, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain and Turkey among the eligible locations.

Vodafone’s postpaid Red plans are priced at $65, $80, and $100 per month, and include 1.5GB, 2.5GB, and 5GB of data, respectively. Vodafone customers can switch to a Red plan with no additional fees provided the plan is the same or greater value.
