Toshiba’s 13.3in Chromebook is on sale now

Toshiba’s low-cost Chrome OS-based laptop has a 13.3in screen, looks sexy

Toshiba has announced that its Chromebook laptop is now available to purchase from major retailers in Australia and New Zealand, as well as from the MyToshiba Web site.

The Toshiba Chromebook was first announced at CES 2014 in Las Vegas earlier in this year, and it features the latest-generation Intel Celeron CPU. The screen size of the laptop is 13.3 inches, which makes it a middle-sized Chromebook compared to the 14in models available from HP, and the 11.6in models available from Acer and Samsung. It has a reported weight of 1.5kg and a profile thickness of just over 20mm.

Powering the Chromebook is a Haswell-based Intel CPU (a Celeron model with two cores), it features 2GB of RAM, and Toshiba claims the laptop has a battery life of nine hours. The screen resolution is 1366x768, and it runs the Chrome OS, which is optimised for running Google’s online services. It’s pitched primarily at home users and students due to its low-cost nature, and the inclusion of HDMI, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, and USB 3.0 (two ports) should appeal to most mainstream users. Additionally, a full-sized SD card slot is included.

Storage in the actual device is limited to 16GB (it’s a solid state drive), but there is 100GB worth of online Google Drive storage provided, which runs out after two years unless you renew.

The Toshiba Chromebook costs $399 in Australia, and $479 in New Zealand.
