PlanetMirror Chooses Dell[TM] PowerEdge[TM] Servers to Support its Linux Environment

– Dell wins on performance, price, footprint and features –

SYDNEY, November 6, 2003 - PlanetMirror, a premium provider of Internet downloads, has chosen Dell’s PowerEdge[TM] servers, running Red Hat[TM] Linux, to power its high speed network, servicing over one million broadband users.

PlantMirror provides high speed downloads for open source codes, system patches, gaming resources and literary archives and pushes out around 2 Terabytes of data per day, equivalent to around half a million file downloads.

According to Jason Andrade, chief technical officer for PlanetMirror, the Dell PowerEdge 2450, backed up by Dell’s PowerVault[TM] SAN solution, outperformed its competitors in performance, cost and Linux support.

As well as looking at comparative units from other vendors, Andrade explored the possibility of building the system in-house. “Dell was the only vendor that could show a high level of Linux knowledge and support, as well as offering us the best features, performance, scalability and bang for buck,” said Andrade. “Dell scored consistently on every point where its competitors did not and the real value for money that we received from Dell’s technology was significantly better than any other vendor in the marketplace,” he added.

Simon Johnson, director of enterprise solutions for Dell Australia and New Zealand said, "Dell's proficiency on both SuSe and Red Hat is a huge attraction with our small business and enterprise customers. The key issue is no longer Linux’s ability to survive in the high-end corporate environment, but rather the hardware partner’s ability to support it - this is where Dell has taken a leadership position."

Also impacting PlanetMirror’s final decision was Dell’s feature rich solution that was not only fast but also reliable. “Dell’s PowerEdge server provided speed and reliability alongside some impressive redundancy features including hardware RAID, dual power supplies and some very impressive hot-swap features,” Andrade continued.

PlanetMirror’s disk storage has expanded from 600 Gigabytes to 2.6 Terabytes over the last two years so the ability of Dell’s infrastructure to expand to meet customer demands was a crucial factor in PlanetMirror’s choice of server.

At the same time, PlanetMirror’s IT infrastructure is hosted offsite, where hosting is charged per rack unit so Dell’s ability to maintain a tidy footprint was another influencing factor. “One of the reasons we have so many Dell PowerVaults is because the footprint was really amenable to deployment in a rack,” said Andrade. “I can now fit 1.5 Terabytes of capacity in 3RU whereas it used to require 9RU to hold 600 Gigabytes. Effectively I can now double my capacity and shrink my storage footprint by a third.”
