Presto: Get Foxtel movies streamed to your iPad with no contract

All-you-can-eat Foxtel movies will be available on Apple tablets with the launch of Presto.

Foxtel movies will be available on Apple tablets following the launch of a new video on demand service called Presto.

Presto makes Foxtel’s movie library available for $20 per month without having to commit to a contract. The service will have access to roughly one thousand movies from several notable Hollywood studios, in addition to granting subscribers access to Foxtel’s seven live movie channels.

Foxtel’s chief executive, Richard Freudenstein, said “Starting March 13, Australian movie lovers will have access to as many movies as they want from a massive library of cinematic hits for a price per week equivalent to what they’d pay for just one standard iTunes movie rental”.

The $20 per month price covers unlimited movie streaming from up to three registered devices. At the time of launch Presto will support Windows and Mac PCs, and Apple iPad devices. Tablets running a full version of Windows 8 Pro will not be compatible with Presto.

Presto will undergo a series of enhancements following its launch. Launch director Jacqui Feeney told Good Gear Guide Presto will support a slew of Android tablets within the next three months, and that the service could add Foxtel television shows to its on-demand library in the future.

Presto streams movies at standard 576i definition — the same quality broadcasted by most television stations — without interruption from advertisements. The service makes use of an adaptive bit-rate algorithm so that the movie quality is moderated to suit the speed of your internet connection.

Movies can be streamed over 3G connections; however, a cautionary prompt is generated to warn users of Presto’s heavy data consumption. Feeney estimates each streamed movie is 1GB-2GB in size.

Presto will be available to the Australian public on 13 March. The service will celebrate its launch by dropping the cost to $5 for the first month.
