HTC One (M8) leaked in Telstra collateral

Leaked Telstra collateral showing off the next HTC flagship reveals it will have a ‘DuoCamera’, a Full HD screen and a metal body.

An anonymous tipster has leaked Telstra’s promotional collateral for HTC’s upcoming flagship to mobile site GSMArena. The brochure reveals the smartphone will be called the HTC One (M8), features ‘DuoCamera’ technology and a Full HD, 5in screen. For the sake of this article, we will refer to the old One by its M7 moniker, and the upcoming One as the M8.

The big difference

HTC is once again trying to differentiate itself by incorporating unconventional camera technologies into its flagship M8. The M7 had an Ultrapixel camera that sacrificed megapixels for improved photography in low-light conditions. The new M8 smartphone now sports something called a DuoCamera, and it comes off as downright radical.

Clearly visible on the leaked promotional material are two rear cameras — that’s right, two cameras that are both located on the M8’s back. These cameras work together to deliver advantages that include the ability to focus ”after you have taken the shot". If true, this means the M8 has the ability to refocus photos after they have been taken, which echoes the functionality of Lytro’s Light Field cameras.

The HTC DuoCamera can also highlight aspects of a photo, soften backgrounds and add 3D effects.

The promotional material makes reference to the M8’s proficiency in low-light situations, which could indicate the Ultrapixel technology used in the original has been retained.

Other notable imaging improvements include a dual-flash and a front-facing 5MP camera.

More than just a camera

The M8 appears to be an evolutionary step forward. It still retains front-facing speakers supplemented by dedicated amplifiers, and it has “an all metal body” for a premium feel. The screen features the same Full HD (1080p) resolution as its predecessor, but now it’s a little bigger at 5-inches.

Telstra’s leaked promotional collateral doesn’t reveal what kit is inside the HTC One (M8), but GSMArena reports that the smartphone will be be equipped with a Snapdragon 801 quad-core 2.3GHz CPU, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. These rumoured HTC specifications are plausible as the CPU is on par with LG’s announced G Pro 2, while Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S5 will have 2GB of RAM.

Interestingly GSMArena reports the new HTC One features expandable microSD storage — something its forefather lacked — and that it uses nano-SIM cards.

Leaked photos of the HTC M8 indicate it will be produced in gold, silver and black; however, apart from the silver M8 depicted in Telstra’s collateral, there is no guarantee these colours will be made available in Australia.

Telstra’s promotional material claims the M8 will be available as an outright purchase for $840. The smartphone on a 24-month contract is priced at $82 per month ($70 mobile accelerate plan with $12 per month handset instalments).

Telstra representatives could not immediately respond to Good Gear Guide’s request for comment. This article will be updated with its response.

Update, 13 Mar: A Telstra spokesperson has responded with the following impartial comment:

"We work with a range of manufacturers to bring new smartphones to our customers. We’ll have more information on future devices in the coming months."
