Australian Notebook Market Attracts One New Competitor Every 8 Weeks, Finds IDC

<p>NORTH SYDNEY, December 8th, 2004 - IDC has recently released the final results and detailed findings for the 3Q 2004 Notebook PC Market. The notebook PC market saw a mild decline of 1.2% from 2Q 2004 but increased by 41.8% from the same period last year. IDC sees the movement towards mobility and decrease in pricing as the two major factors causing the movement from desktops to notebooks in the overall PC market. Whilst the performance of the overall notebook market is solid, the key findings are hidden within the numbers.</p>
<p>IDC found that the dynamics of the Australian notebook PC market have changed greatly over the last few quarters. To give clarity on the current state and future direction of the notebook market, IDC has identified the following four points that all should become familiar with:</p>
<p>1) Increased Competition: The past four quarters have seen an unprecedented growth of new vendors in the local notebook market. Asus, BenQ, LG Electronics, Medion, and Samsung have all invested in local operations and have dramatically increased the competition for incumbent vendors.</p>
<p>2) Slow Growth of the Whitebook Market: Putting aside the Northern Territory education win by Optima, the local manufacturer market has yet to truly blossom despite growth in the overall notebook market. This should continue into the foreseeable future despite the efforts from Intel and AMD.</p>
<p>3) Two-Spindle Notebooks Now the Standard: Almost 9 out of every 10 notebooks sold in 3Q 2004 was a two-spindle (CPU with a single optical drive) device. The year-on-year growth for the share of this form factor was just under 16% whilst three-spindle, or desktop replacement notebooks, declined by almost 18% over the same period.</p>
<p>4) Rewritable DVD is Exploding: Quite possibly the largest growth of a technology within the local notebook market is the share of DVD-RW/CD-RW notebooks. The share of notebooks with re-writable DVD/CD optical drives increased by over 33% from 3Q 2003.</p>
<p>Michael Sager, IDC Market Analyst for PC Hardware noted that, "In addition to the above points on the local market there were important changes in the rankings for the local notebook market. Once again Toshiba finished in the top position, followed by Dell, who overtook HP for the second position. This is especially notable because just as recently as 2Q 2003 HP actually held the leadership position in the notebook market."</p>
<p>"Rounding out the top six were Acer, IBM, and Apple followed by a rising cast of competition that could change the face of these leadership standings in future quarters," added Mr Sager.</p>
