Altec Lansing’s latest submission into the 5.1 market, the 251, is aimed at gamers and movie buffs alike.
The speakers were very easy to set up with colour-coded cables and a helpful user manual. The system boasts an overall continuous power (RMS) of 45W. Each shielded satellite contains a 3in full-range driver and a 5.25in long throw woofer housed in the subwoofer.
The 251 has a silver and black colour scheme, and the main controls are located on the front right speaker, as is a handy headphone jack. The main controls include dials for master, centre and surround volume plus a power switch. The satellites and included centre speaker are the same dimensions and are supported by metal stands; only the surround satellites can be wall-mounted. The subwoofer employs a ported wood cabinet and has a bass level control at the rear.
We tested this setup using the game Soldier of Fortune II and noted that sound effects were extremely crisp and clear. Samples from a synthesiser were also used, bringing forth distinctive highs and lows from the respective speakers.
