How to access your PC remotely from your Android smartphone

Forgetting files on your home PC could no longer be a daily gripe with the release of Chrome Remote Desktop.

Google has made it possible to access your Windows or Mac PC computer on your smartphone. Doing so requires two things: an Android smartphone and the Chrome browser.

The first step is to prime your Windows or Mac computer for remote access through the Chrome Web app store. The process requires you set up a six digit pin number that will authorise a remote connection between your smartphone and computer.

The next step is to download the Chrome Remote Desktop application from your Android smartphone. Authorise the connection by entering your PIN and your desktop will be displayed on your smartphone.

Once these steps are followed, it’s possible to access your desktop remotely, or even authorise someone else to do so by sharing a code — a nifty way to have a relative troubleshoot your computer when they’re on the go.

The Google application has been available on the Play store for six hours at the time of writing, and in that time it has earned a 4.5 star rating with generally positive commentary.

Things you should know

In this mode your smartphone touchscreen will control the computer’s cursor. This means it will work as the computer’s trackpad.

Click in a text field and the smartphone’s native keyboard will pop up. It’s a simple way to make small edits when you’re on the go.

The computer needs to be powered for a remote connection to be established. Initiating remote desktop can be done from the Chrome Remote Desktop application on your Android smartphone, or from the Chrome app drawer on your computer.
