Infographic: Spotify says Australians love to love, keep fit

Spotify releases data giving insights into Aussie listener preferences

Online music streaming service, Spotify, is celebrating its second birthday in Australia by giving away some tidbits of information regarding how Australians use the service.

The company has given the information out in infographic style (see below), giving some extreme context to its figures, such as stating that the Australian public has streamed 8200 years worth of music since May 2012, and that the Sydney Harbour Bridge could have been built 1000 times over during that time.

But the really juicy data concern musical taste, and it seems Australians are keen to support local talent just as much global superstars. Sydney artist, Flume, is Australia’s most streamed artist in the country this year, even when pit against global talent, and it’s the second year in a row that he has taken the crown. His self-titled album is number one in the Top 5 Most Streamed Albums list.

Playlists can often tell a lot about a person, and in this case an entire country. It seems that we’re a lovely-dovey bunch, with Spotify picking on the fact that over half a million playlists have been created with romance as the theme. Overall, 27 million playlists have been created over the past two years, and other popular topics include fitness (over 200,000 playlists), relaxation (300,000), and ‘zen’ (80,000).

In what may come as a surprise to nobody at all, Spotify claims that its data shows Victoria to be the most ‘switched on’ state musically, mainly because it produces more playlists per capita relative to all other states. However, New South Wales is claimed to be the most relaxed and spiritual state. Queensland is the state where Eminem is streamed the most (according to Spotify's data for the last month).

Kate Vale, managing director for Spotify in Australia and New Zealand, had this to say about the Australian musical landscape on Spotify.
