Corel adds to XML push

Ottawa-based software maker Corel made two product announcements on Tuesday and both represent the company’s continued push towards its Extensible Markup Language (XML) strategy.

Smart Graphics Studio is a platform aimed at the creation of Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG)-based smart graphics and Web applications that take XML and legacy data and display it in a graphical format to deliver it to PDAs and other handheld devices. Corel said Studio would enables organizations, Web designers and developers in separating the graphical, functional and data components of applications.

Studio includes Developer SG, Server SG and SVG Viewer.

XMetal 4, the other product announced, is designed for the implementation of customized XML applications while continuing to extend the authoring capabilities to ActiveX-compliant applications.

"We’re now able to offer XML authoring tools and we’ve created an ActiveX component version of XMetal that you can embed within a Web browser to a custom application," said Shawn Henderson, the Ottawa-based product manager for XMetal.

Henderson added that Corel has seen demand for XML in such verticals as finance, government, manufacturing and the publishing industries.

XMetal 4, an upgrade from version 3 that was released in February of 2002, is divided into four components which includes Author, XMetal for ActiveX, Developer and XMetal Central.
