Lumia 930: Hands-on with Nokia's 2014 flagship

New flagship Nokia signed by big three Australian telcos

Nokia’s flagship Lumia 930 will go on sale this July at Telstra, Vodafone and Optus. The 5in smartphone is among the first to run Windows Phone 8.1, is the second Nokia to come with a quad-core CPU and has a 20 megapixel PureView camera. Good Gear Guide had a hands on session with the new flagship in the company of Nokia’s Australian managing director.

The Lumia 930 is Nokia’s answer to the flagships from Samsung, HTC, Sony and Apple. Thin bezels border an OLED display that spans 5-inches, has a Full HD resolution and a subsequent 441 pixel-per-inch density.

The 16 million colour screen displays Windows Phone 8.1 software. “Windows Phone 8.1 has 50 plus new features,” explains Steve Lewis, Nokia’s managing director. Among these new features is a notification centre akin to that of Google’s Android, customisable shortcuts and the ability to have the live tiles on your homescreen dressed in a wallpaper of your choice.

Microsoft too is throwing itself in the health market with Bing Health. The Lumia 930 uses Nokia’s proprietary SensorCore technology to measure your daily step count and the total calories burnt. “Bing Health is just a starting point and I believe the health and fitness category is going to do big things,” said Lewis.

The Windows Phone Store has grown from having 7,000 apps at launch to being populated with 255,000 applications; however, this still trails the million applications of Apple and Google’s stores.

Lewis said Microsoft’s application store has reached a point of maturity. “Now we have enough apps. While we do want to get the core apps in store, we want to focus on those apps having the best user experience."

Nokia loyalists will recognise the Lumia 930 as a coming-of-age device. The Lumia 930 is the first Nokia flagship to be powered by a quad-core CPU, apart from the phablet-sized Lumia 1520. The Lumia 930 features a 2.2GHz quad-core CPU, 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage.

Bright-coloured polycarbonate back cases conceal a 2420 milliamp-hour battery and accommodate a 20 megapixel PureView camera that is capable of Full HD video recording. A secondary 1.2 megapixel camera can be found on the front of the smartphone and can record videos in high definition resolution.

Pricing for the Lumia 930 is competitive at $729 outright, or you can buy it from Vodafone, Telstra and Optus when it is released in July. Good Gear Guide will have a review of the Lumia 930 shortly.

Update 1 Jul: Video recording resolution updated.

As the Maserati or BMW of laptops, it would fit perfectly in the hands of a professional needing firepower under the hood, sophistication and class on the surface, and gaming prowess (sports mode if you will) in between.
