Apple has increased the speed of its flagship Titanium PowerBook G4 notebooks to a maximum of 1GHz, up from a previous high of 800MHz.
Sending out the message that not only Windows-based notebooks feature portable DVD burning, the new top-of-the-line Titanium PowerBook G4 boasts a slot-loading SuperDrive. This allows writing of DVD-R discs at 1x, CD-R discs at 8x, CD-RW discs at 4x, and the reading of DVDs at 6x and CDs at 24x.
Apple has also equipped the top $6499 PowerBook with a speedy 64MB DDR ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 graphics controller, 512MB of SDRAM, a 60GB hard disk, Gigabit Ethernet, and integrated 802.11 wireless networking. The widescreen 15.2in display capable of a resolution of 1280x854 has been retained.
Apple has also updated the more mid-consumer iBook line, upping the PowerPC G3 processor to 800MHz and increasing graphics performance with the new ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 graphics controller. iBooks are now available from $2195, depending on configuration. Apple also offers build-to-order machines.
