NEC Corp. started sample shipping of 64M-bit mobile specified RAM on Tuesday, claiming it has the world's fastest reading speed.

The new 64M-bit µPD4664312 RAM is designed for cellular phones and mobile devices that can access wireless Internet services. It features reading speeds of 65 nanosecond per address and 18 nanosecond per page, according to an NEC statement.

As the volume of data on the wireless Internet has grown, various high-volume DRAM (dynamic RAM) and SRAM (static RAM) products have been developed, NEC said. However, DRAM power consumption is high, and SRAM gets expensive at over 16M bits, the statement said.

Aiming to solve these problems, NEC unveiled the first generation of low-power consuming mobile specified RAM of 16M bits in 2000 and 32M bits in 2001. The 64M bit RAM is the latest in this family, the statement said.

The sample price is ¥3,000 ($45) per chip. The company plans to start mass production of 500,000 chips per month from May this year.
