Maxtor Personal Storage 5000LE

Businesses or individual users may be looking for a backup solution for the home or office that supersedes the current offerings of tape or disk backup. The latest external hard drive from Maxtor may be just the solution to your problems.

With an unformatted capacity of 80GB and a spin rate of 5400rpm, this external drive proves it is no slouch in size or speed. The hard drive itself is a Maxtor DiamondMax with Ultra ATA133 interface. Compliant with USB 2.0 and backwards-compatible with 1.1, the drive has a quoted data transfer rate of 480Mbps. Located on the front of the unit is a button that can be configured via the supplied software to back up important files with just one touch. A snazzy stand is provided in the box contents and ensures a small footprint when the unit is placed upright.

We tested the device by copying a mixed bag of some 51 files with a total size of 1GB, which took 2min 11sec. Some users who utilise the older standard of USB 1.1 may be in for a longer wait. Two other models that are available (5000DV, 5000XT) differ in size and offer FireWire and USB 2.0 connectivity for users who would benefit from the speed increase.

Maxtor Personal Storage 5000LE
Price: 5000LE $499, 5000DV (120GB) $649, 5000XT (250GB) $899

If you can afford the price tag, it is well worth the money. It out performs any other laptop I have tried for gaming, and the transportable design and incredible display also make it ideal for work.
