Foxtel makes triple threat play with broadband, home phone and pay TV

Parent company Telstra throws its weight behind Foxtel in video-on-demand war

Foxtel is leveraging its relationship with Telstra in its most defensive move yet against a wave of video-on-demand services with the launch of bundled plans.

Foxtel will bundle its pay TV services with new home phone and broadband plans from today for $90 per month. Plans will be offered on 12- or 24-month contracts.

Subscribers will benefit from unmetered usage of Foxtel’s streaming services. This includes the company’s own subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) platform, Presto Entertainment, a recent 50-50 venture launched between Foxtel and Seven West Media.

Foxtel is leveraging its relationship with Telstra as it delivers broadband and home phone services over the telco’s infrastructure. Telstra owns 50 per cent of Foxtel, with the remaining 50 per cent stake owned by News Corp.

The Pay TV company launched Presto entertainment in January as a pre-emptive move against rival streaming services breaking into the Australian market. This includes Netflix, which is scheduled to launch in March, and Stan, a partnership between Nine Entertainment Co and Fairfax Media. Stan followed Presto Entertainment’s launch in January.

Foxtel is offering movies and television content under its Presto Entertainment banner for $15 per month, while Stan undercuts the service at $10 per month. Netfllx is expected to match Stan’s pricing at $10 per month.

Foxtel’s bundled plans will start from $90 per month, and will include unlimited standard local and national calls, a 50GB data allowance and Foxtel’s TV entertainment pack, which spans 43 channels.

Data allowances increase to 100GB, 200GB and 500GB on respective $95, $105 and $125 bundled plans.

Offered under the 12- and 24-month bundles is Foxtel’s Hub, which is the company’s revised Wi-Fi modem for content streaming to multiple devices, including smartphones and tablets.

Foxtel Broadband is available from today over Telstra’s ADSL2 network. Broadband and home phone bundles will be offered later this year over the National Broadband Network.
