An estimated 400,000 homes will have access to high speed Internet following the construction of ten satellite ground stations by NBN Co.

The network of satellites will benefit rural communities with the availability the NBN Co’s Long Term Satellite Service (LTSS), said Julia Dickinson, satellite architect at NBN Co.

“Those in remote areas physically removed from some essential services such as access to education and health specialists.

“The NBN satellite service will play a critical role in helping Australians be on a level playing field as everyone in the bush will have access to speeds that are as good...as what many people in the city have today.”

The network will deliver theoretical download speeds of 25 megabits per second (Mbps) and upload speeds of 5Mbps.

Availability of LTSS will follow the launch of NBN Co’s first satellite from the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana, in 2016.

NBN Co. is running the ‘Shoot for the Stars’ competition to mark the occasion. Australian students between five and twelve have the chance to decorate the nose cone of the rocket, which will launch the first satellite into space. Winner of the grand prize will have the opportunity to name the satellite.

The milestone is part of NBN’s strategy to connect 8 million homes and premises to its Long Term Satellite Service by 2020.
