What Netflix? Vodafone offers free Stan subscriptions instead

Vodafone gives existing customers, upgrading customers and new customers, Stan subscriptions on the house

Popular streaming video on demand service, Netflix, may be the current talk of the town, but for Vodafone, the key word is Stan. The telco has stitched up a partnership with the Aussie streaming service to offer up to three-month subscriptions for customers on its existing Red plans.

In addition, Stan subscriptions are being used as an incentive for new customers and existing customers who upgrade to better 12- or 24-month plans. Customers signing up to Vodafone’s $70 and $80 Red plans can get rewarded with a six-month subscription to Stan; customers who sign up to a $100 Red Plan can get a 12-month subscription to Stan.

While the subscriptions to the Stan streaming service are on the house, data from Stan streams will still count towards a user’s monthly mobile allowance. Vodafone claims that one hour of standard definition viewing can consume up to 1.13GB of data, while Full HD content will chew up 2.89GB. The $70 and $80 Red plans currently offer 3GB and 4GB of data, respectively, not including bonus data deals, while the $100 plan offers 6GB of data. Excess data usage is covered by automatic data packs that cost $10 per 1GB.

If users are watching Stan streams over the mobile network, the app will notify them to switch to Wi-Fi. The service can be used with other Internet connections, and it can be streamed on up to three devices at the same time.

In a press release, Stan’s Chief Executive Officer, Mike Sneesby, said, “We are thrilled to be Vodafone’s exclusive SVOD partner in Australia”.

The Stan streaming video on demand (SVOD) service is a joint venture between Fairfax Media and Nine Entertainment Co. It currently offers sought-after TV shows such as Better Call Saul and Luther, as well as the James Bond collection, in its library of content.
